I thought I’d do a quick review for “The Avengers”, which I saw this past weekend. I hadn’t been particularly planning to see the movie, was suggested, I wasn’t about to say, “no.” I won’t give away any spoilers, of course.
Let me start by saying that I’m not as familiar with them as some other comic book teams (I mainly read x-Men in my younger days). I also hadn’t seen any of the precursor movies (Ironman 1 or 2, Thor, Captain America). So I can’t say how true it was to the comics, or how well it flowed from the other movies.
Now, to state the painfully obvious, this wasn’t a cerebral movie. It was about action and one-liners, but it did these well. The action scenes were choreographed well enough not to look it. Though the story was far-fetched (it is a comic book movie, after all), it was written well enough not to seem cliché.
As for my can-the-hero-die yardstick (which I blogged about in The Problem With Potter), this movie did better than a lot of its kind. 1) A second-tier character did die and 2) There was one sequence at the end that almost had me believing one of the Avengers would die. That isn’t a mean feat. Superheroes just don’t die, so even getting an audience to think it’s possible says something about the story.
My favorite bit in the movie was the confrontation between the Hulk and Loki at the end. If you haven’t seen the movie, you’ll know it when you see it!
All in all, it was worth the price of admission. I’d definitely recommend it to any fan of this kind of movie.
